Glucose Monitors~~

I think this had to be the forum with the most information! We got together on October 3, 1997 to discuss different meters! There are so many choices of glucose monitors out there, that it was hard to keep up with which one everyone was talking about! We talked about Accuechecks, One Touches, Glucometers, and even the latest hope... the non-invasive meters! Thank you everyone who provided evaluations of the meters you have used and especially thanks to Mark, who is 15, who provided all the information on the non-invasive meters! If you are looking for a meter, read this forum to get an idea of what people think of the one you are considering! I'd also like to suggest that you donate your old meter(s) to the Russian Collection we are doing! Please look at Melissa's Announcement to get all the details!

Debby:
Thanks Melissa. It's been very informative tonight. I heard a rumor that Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville is also working on a noninvasive moniter. Does anyone know about that?

Melissa (POM) :
I just looked at Integ's FAQ section and here's one of the questions...

When will LifeGuide be available for use by the public? We expect to make the system
available in 1998. Availability is subject to FDA review of the product's performance and
accompanying literature.

Denise F:
Well, this has been very informative tonight! It makes me want to go out and see if I can find some of the new ones I've seen tonight. Wouldn't it be great if there was such a thing as "try before you buy" when it came to meters! Goodnight all.

Melissa (POM) :
And this one from Beth about the program for the One Touch...

We use the One Touch Profile with the InTouch software. It's really nice
to be able to download all of that and have the color graphs but we did
find one hitch -- if you have to take your sugar more than once in the time
slots given it won't list them all on the report. Figures them in on the
averages report but doesn't list them -- seems like it only lists the last
one in the time slot if I remember correctly. Can be a little confusing if
that happens.

Melissa (POM) :
This is a letter I got from Lyn tonight about one of the programs you can use....

Melissa,

Donna, from Cweb...had posted this in the message board the other day..I
downloaded and installed this program..it's really a good one..and very
simple to use..any of the folks at the forum tonight that don't have a
download capability with their meter, may want to ck it out...

Lyn

Hi, BgTracker97 is ready and available for download. Please
note that the program will only run under Windows 95...it
does not download readings from meters...making it ideal for
someone who uses more than one meter. I beta tested this
program for four months and found it useful for tracking
Bob's glucose and insulin amounts (It lets you track 1/2
units of insulin for the wee ones! Something that I didn't
find in other programs) It also prints out a copy of tests
results, averages daily, weekly or monthly readings. The
program has many other features...Best of all...it is
FREE!!!! http://members.aol.com/bgtracker/BgTrack/Index.html
BTW-Jim is a fellow diabetic and would appreciate some positive feed
back. Enjoy!

Mark from Aus:
And last of all we have the 'Life Guide' from Integ.

This is one of my favorites!!!
It works by using a TINY skin puncture, that you cant feel!!! It then sucks out some 'Interstitial Fluid' which is a fluid just underneath the skin.
It measures the ISF for the amount of glucose and that is VERY similar to the amount of blood glucose!!!

Mark, you have done such a wonderful job on these non-invasive meters... is there one more?
Thursday, October 02, 1997 at 23:50:35 (EDT) - 207.22.198.49

Denise F:
Judith, that's interesting that the meters weren't too far off. I was wondering if the Elite was very accurate. One night I tested my daughter with it, and had trouble getting the blood on the strip in the semi-dark. The meter said she was 20, but didn't give me an error message. I rechecked, and it said 144. Then I checked with the Advantage, and it said 106. Maybe I should call the company to see if they'd send a replacement.

Thursday, October 02, 1997 at 23:48:40 (EDT) - ts001d24.spr-ma.concentric.net

Judith:
The old Exactechs didn't have a very good reputation for accuracy. I think they're better since they became Medisense. I did some informal comparisons at camp this summer - tested each kid on 3 machines at once several times. I found the Profile, Advantage, and Elite to be fairly close to one another in results. The Precision was way off when the weather was very hot, but in line with the others at lower temps.

Our endo LOVES the graphs and statistical summaries we get from our Profile and the IN TOUCH software. It gives us at home a quick visual picture of how we've been doing lately by graphing out the averages and individual readings. Now if we can just find a way to get all the numbers into the right reading spans.......

Did I show the Profile earlier? Here it is...

Marcia:
Does anyone have a guess as to when the glucowatch..or anything similar will actually be on the market? We have been hearing about this for almost 10 years ans so far nothing..I am beginning to think there will be a cure before we get non-invasive monitoring..(and I'm not holding my breath for "the cure" any longer either)

Melissa (POM) :

Thursday, October 02, 1997 at 23:42:56 (EDT) - 207.22.198.49

Christine:
the profile will do lots with insulin and food graphs, you or the doc can down load the readings. things like that.
Thursday, October 02, 1997 at 23:42:09 (EDT) - ppp-206-170-25-31.sntc01.pacbell.net

Laurie R.:
we like our Profile...It differes from the One Touch II in that it has more specific ways to maintain a memory and log. You can add in the Profile: insulin dosages, category of test (meal, exercise, special event, etc) and you can't do that with the One Touch II.
Thursday, October 02, 1997 at 23:41:18 (EDT) - ts19-lake.pacific.net

Melissa (POM) :
Ok, I found THIS WEBPAGE at diabetesnet.com to be especially informative about all the latest non- and semi-invasive meters!!

And now, this wonderful letter I got about them all....

I'm not sure if I can make it Tuesday night or not but here is the scoop (from the rumor mill) on the non-invasives you have mentioned. The dream beam is using technology that according to many experts in the field is based upon flawed underlying data. This approach will likely not work according to them. They were prohibited from going forward with their public offering and are back to the drawing board. The Glucowatch is my personal favorite. It seems to have the best chance and I actually think that Cygnus would not be a half bad OTC investment if you have a high-risk portion of your portfolio. Cygnus is a real company that already makes real products and their partnership with B-D is very promising. Integ and SpectRx are using a similar approach but they don't have the same advantages. Neither is near as good as Cygnus's and they don't have the advantage of continuous monitoring. My understanding is that Cygnus (glucowatch) is furthest ahead in trials and seems to "get it" in terms of customer needs (continuous monitoring). Cygnus seems to be offering a far superior product and they have the attorneys/infrastructure to get it through the FDA. If you look at Integ's public offering and their last six months balance sheet, you will see what I mean about where the money seems to be going. Someone at Integ seems to be making a tidy sum, but their R&D seems to have mssed the point entirely.

The only problem with the Glucowatch is that they have encountered some need to rotate wrists/sites because of irritation. My questions are: Does this methodology work well in the dark? Would the skin irritation problem be lessened by wearing it only at night? I don't know about you, but I would certainly think that having it on at night would be wonderful even if you had to let your wrists rest during the day or go back to another method during the day. This is the problem with the other methods; you still have to get up in the middle of the night to test. And even though they might hurt less, they haven't really improved the hassle of testing at all. I would think that even if they do come out sooner than Glucowatch, once the Glucowatch comes out (or something similar) they might become obsolete.

Anyhow, feel free to post this if I can't make it.

Take Care,
Sonia Cooper- sonia08@ibm.net

Sammy really likes the Advantage accu-check for school. The freebee all the kids got from diabetes camp.. Haven't used it enough to have a opinion on it yet, but if the kids like it and will use it at school that is all that counts!!!

How does the One Touch II differ from the Profile? We have used the Basic, Profile, Accucheck Advantage, and Elite. Shannon likes the Elite best because it doesn't take much blood, but I like the Accucheck best. I do think I'd like to check out some of the others we've heard about tonight, though!

Hi to all!
We have used the Ames Glucometer, Accuchek 2, Accuchek Easy and now use the Medisense Pen and Card. The memory holds 20 readings and there is no cleaning of parts involved. Also they are small, easily carried and used. Strips are foil covered so they do not take up much space.

Have you heard about the new Glucometer model, due out about January? It will use a ten-test cartridge, rather than strips. Has lots (? amt) of memory, and graphs right on the machine. They plan to offer them free at some point, according to the Bayer rep.

Okay, this is the most promising of all the non invasive meters!!!

Okay, this one works by 'leeching' the glucose out of the pores in the skin by using electroosmosis, or something like that!!!
This is still VERY experimental!!! They are still testing, how long it can be used in the same position etc.
There is also health concerns with this meter, because viruses and bacteria can breed in the pad used to collect and measure the glucose. The viruses are then, easily transmited to the body, through the open pores!!

Mark from Aus:
Okay, first of all I would like to introduce you to 'The Diasensor 1000'!!
This was the worlds FIRST EVER non-invasive blood glucose meter!!
Well basically, you stick your arm over the sensor, Infared light then passes through the skin into the blood, the light is then reflected back to the sensor where it is analyzed, converted into a bg level and displayed on the screen!!
You can buy one of these in the UK or Germany for £5000!!!
A 4 to 5 hour calibration process is required for each patient, and this has to be done in a special center, not in the home.
Well, basically this is a bulky machine that requires a LOT of maintenance!! But it holds 2 years worth of tests in the memory!!

Thursday, October 02, 1997 at 23:09:23 (EDT) - 1cust9.max17.atlanta.ga.ms.uu.net

Denise F:
Theresa--honesty about blood sugar readings isn't a problem--at least not so far! The main reason I want the time and date on the meter is because we are not very consistent about writing down the readings each time. So when I have to "back track," it's not always easy to figure out when the reading was taken.
Another question for those of you who order supplies by mail: Does it bother you to give out your insurance information and social security numbers? I have been reluctant to order from these companies for that reason.

I just realized that I didn't find anything on Exactech! We use the Exactech pen as a backup! It's really handy but it has no memory and that's a pain! I've come to depend on One Touch 11's memory! So when we have to use the Exactec, I have to be extra careful to get the number before it shuts off!

Melissa (POM) :
I got a letter from a man who represents Diabetic Supplies By Mail... I found his site online... he says....

Relative to your meeting on Glucose Meters, I have a strong opinion on
meter types. Most meters are reflectometers, determining your reading based
on the color change of the test strip. They are not able to control their
batches of strips that well, and that is why there are codes associated
with these types of meters. The most popular of this type would be the
ONE-TOUCH meters by LIFESCAN.

A much better meter is the new RSG by Exactech. It works on sensing current
flow through the material deposited on the test strip. There is a very
deterministic relationship between the current flow and the amount of
Glucose in your blood. They DO NOT HAVE ANY CODES to enter. This is a major
reason I am sending these to the older diabetics on Medicare. Simplicity of
use!!

You can find his website at Diabetes Supplies By Mail - CLICK HERE

Melissa (POM) :
Linda told me about the Checkmate Plus...

I bought my first Chekmate Plus over 18 months ago. After it was stolen
in January, I replaced it. I didn't think they could improve it but they
did.

The Checkmate Plus caught my eye because of the design, I had been using
a meter which required a separate lancing device. Checkmate plus has the
lancing device built in. I also like the memory. You can include up to
250 tests and insulin injections and after 25 tests you get an average.
The buttons fro this info are a little hard to maneuver, but they do give
you a instruction book and a little instruction card you can take with
you. it is easy to load and you don't have to calibrate each box of
strips! it gives you commands in the window that tell you what you need
to do and what you are doing wrong. This monitor is small enough that
you can check your glucose anywhere and not be real obvious.

I think Kids could operate the Checkmate pretty easy. The fact that it
is all in one is a plus in the fact that you don't lose the lancing
device. It doesn't take a lot of blood and it has a "bowl design" in the
strip so you can get the blood to stay easier. And if you don't use
enough blood, it tells you.

Checkmate Plus does have two bottles of control solution that you can use
if you are concerned about your strips. One for high 7 one for low.

I am not sure of the price of Checkmate Plus because both times I was
lucky enough to find a deal. The first time I bought it I got the meter
Free with 200 strips and the second time it was $10 with 200 strips. The
strips are really cheap. I mail order mine for less than $40 for 100
strips.

The improvement I spoke of earlier was the case. My first Checkmate came
in a hard plastic formed case, It protected the meter good but I worried
that a bad enough lick could damage the case. My second one came in a
padded leather like case, that was actually smaller. There is still a
place to carry a few extra strips and lancets.

I think the Checkmate Plus is probably as painless as you can get with a
lancet. I really like mine.

Hi all. I'm joining you a little late, but thought I'd add my 2 cents' worth. We recently purchased the Elite, and I like the fact that it uses so little blood and works pretty fast, but I wish it had the time and date on it! Here's a letter I got about the Accucheck meters....

Eric has had diabetes for less than 2 years, but I will share our
monitor experience. We started out with the Accuchek Easy. I really
liked the memory and the averaging capabilities it had. However, it had
a removable strip guide that had to be cleaned. It seemed to require
cleaning more and more often, and finally the first went out
completely.
The company replaced it and the second one did ok for a while, but
started doing the same thing. When our mail order pharmacy offered an
even exchange program for the Accuchek Advantage, I called them. We
made an even exchange, and they even exchanged the unopened strips that
I had purchased for the "Easy". Eric was already familiar with the
Advantage, as our schools had purchased them and he was using one
already at school. It seems to require less blood than the Easy, and
since the blood never actually comes in contact with the machine, no
cleaning is required. I do, however, miss the averaging feature of the
"Easy" machine. The Advantage has a clock and date and adequate memory,
but does not average as the Easy machine did. (The Accuchek Easy kept a
14 day average, which I found kept us in a groove, and helped Eric have
better control, trying to deep a good average.)

Price has never been a problem, since insurance covered the first
machine (in the hospital), and we exchanged for the new machine.

We got a new lancet device with the Elite monitor - Microlet Auto Lancing Device. We used the Penlet . The Mocrolet uses less blood and Brian says it's less painful. Down side is it's more awkward than the Penlet and it's harder for him to "cock". I think an older kid or adult could do it ok.

Melissa (POM) :
Ok, Mark! Give it about 1/2 an hour and we'll talk about all that you found! :-)

Here's another one about the One Touch Profile!!

Hi!

Kiersten (age 4 1/2) uses the One Touch Profile. You put in the strip,
apply a bubbled up drop of blood, and wait 45 seconds. It holds 250
readings at a time, and you can code them for before and after the three
main meals, bedtime, exercise, hypoglycemia, different food, during the
night, etc. You can also program in your carb counts and your insulin, but
we haven't used those functions, since it doesn't accept fractional units,
and most of Kiersten's injections use a measurement involving a 1/2 or 1/4
unit. The memories include a 14 day and 30 day averages, and then averages
for all categories listed above: meals, bedtimes, etc.

We also have the matching software from One Touch: IN TOUCH. With the
cable attachment, we download the meter readings into the computer, and
then the data is available in about 8 or 10 varieties of graphs,
spreadsheets, or charts. We find the meter easy to use; Kiersten does
about half of her bg tests herself. The software is very user friendly,
and the graphing capabilities are wonderful for the visits to the
endocrinologist.

The meter is about $100. We got ours for free by sending in 350 Life
Points from the strip boxes from Lifescan. The test strips run about $36-
$38 per 50. The software was about $70, and extra for the cable, but well
worth it.

Our insurance (Blue Cross) pays for the prescription rate for most supplies
as long as there is a prescription on file: lancets, strips, syringes,
insulin, glucagon kit, etc. are all covered. Because of that, I am not
current on the cost per day for Kiersten's meter supplies.

We are very satisfied with the Lifescan One Touch Profile. (Our back-up
meter is our older one, the Lifescan One Touch II. It has a lower memory,
but also could be downloaded to the computer, although the endocrinologist
had the software for that one....we didn't have the capability at home when
we were using that one.)

DAD:
compared to todays meters the tracer II is a dinosaur. you had to prck your finger and place the drop of blood on the strip. then start the meter when it counted to 60 it would beep lettinng you know to wipe the blood off and put it into the little itty bitty slot. after another 60 sec. it would give you a readout. when we saw the one touch II it was a life saver...

Sue, Caremark is just the insurance we got with Daryl's job! I'm sure anyone could get on with them though! They are fairly popular! When I go into the pharmacy and sign their book for caremark, I see that it is quite a large book of all the customers who used Caremark prescription service!

Here is one of the letters I got about the Profile!

ONE TOUCH PROFILE -

My daughter uses the Profile one touch from lifescan.....the machine
isnt that expensive...how ever the strips are...for 200 of them it is
169.00 here in Washington it is the most popular and the most
recommended by endocrinoligist and it does not require alot of blood
just a drop....and it takes 45 sec to count down.......also you get a
10year gaurentee and a possible extended warentee..of 5 years for
free...they stand behind there machines and they work witht the drug
store .....My daughters machine stopped working and I called the 1-800
number and they called the drug store and I went and picked up a new
one..and gave the drug store the old one.....I highly recommend this
machine...Lori White - mark.white@mail.prostar.com

Lyn, we have one of them around here somewhere, but don't use it. We use the Profile at home, Precision QID in my purse, QID in Marissa's class and Profile in the school clinic. I think Jeff and I thought the SureStep was good in that there is a dot on the strip that turns blue, I think, to let you know if you have put enough blood on the strip. The downside of the meter is putting the bloody strip in the machine; cleaning is not that easy. We have tried almost every meter in the past 4 yrs!

Our kids are three and four and a half. We do all the checking although I am making progress in teaching the four and a half year old. Alan Bachrach:
As far as I can tell you can get any of the machines for free. The companies make their money on the strips. Call the diabetes educator at any hospital and they will have at least one brand available for free. We have gone through about 6 machines and have not paid for any of them. However with two kids we spend $7.50 per day on strips! (2 kids X 5 glucose checks each!). Believe me, they make the money.

Jody, I know that Bayer is coming out with a different type of system for the "strips." Rather than individually wrapped strips, they come as a "wheel" with about 10-12 "strips" per wheel. My husband saw them at the ADA conference in late June. Unfortunately, he is not here to talk about the.

If you have problems wiht the foil wrappers can you use a plastic bottle, Accu check easy has them. And open a few out of the foil and put them in the plastic bottle for your son. Then all he has to do is open it and the strips are already out of the foil. It is air tight.

Alan Bachrach:
Hi Folks. Just joining in. We have tried the advantage, but currently use the glucometer elite. The cost of strips seems to be about the same for all. The "vaccum" effect of the elite makes it a lot easier. We never waste strips anymore because of inadquate amounts of blood. I wouldn't use any other at this point.

Hello Mark...

One advantage of the foil-wrapped strips is that you don't need to worry about the whole bottle of strips being exposed to air and light if left unopen (I'm not sure how much this happens in real life!) The nice thing about them is the convenience; you only have to take a few with you as opposed to the whole bottle.

I wouldn't let the strips determine the meter, rather, the accuracy and your needs.

For those of you who prefer foil-wrapped strips, but you are having problems with opening the Elite strips, the Precision strips are also foil-wrapped. They have a small "tear mark" which allows for easier opening.

Hey Pink Panther, you're in the right place!

I got alot of letters from people telling me about their meters! This one was sent to me by Judith!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The One Touch II was our main meter for a number of years, until we
got the deluxe Profile, also by Lifescan. I've tried nearly every meter
made in the past ten years or so (at home or at camp)and find that the One
Touch II ranks very near the top of the list. It is easy to use, with only
three steps (turn on power, insert strip, apply drop), making it a very good
choice for children from about the age of three up. Results are ready in 45
seconds. On-screen prompts, in a choice of nineteen languages, guide the
user and point out problems and possible solutions.
It is considered to be one of the most accurate and reliable
machines made. One of the best features is the 250-reading memory, complete
with time and date notation. Numbers representing specific occurences (such
as illness, exercise, etc.) can be used as event markers with any reading.
Results can be readily downloaded to a computer and the data manipulated in
various ways. Lifescan offers a software management program (In Touch), and
the meter is also compatible with Humabase, used by many physicians. It is
easy to scroll backward through the memory manually, and there is automatic
averaging of the readings of the last fourteen days.
The machine itself is very sturdy, holding up well under the
less-than-gentle handling of a child. When we have had problems, I've found
the 24-hour-a-day toll-free Lifescan support to be excellent. If the
situation was not easily remedied, a new meter was sent to us immediately,
without charge, generally arriving in 24-36 hours (once in only 16 hours!).
There are a few negatives to the One Touch II: Because it offers so
many features, it is necessarily one of the larger machines on the market,
making it somewhat bulky for purse or pocket. It must be placed on a flat
surface when used, and the fairly large drop of blood aimed accurately onto
the strip; an inadequate amount will trigger an error message. The test
window area does get contaminated with blood, especially when used by a
child. Cleaning is quite easy, but the detachable strip holder could
potentially be lost or broken in the process. The strips come with various
code numbers - 1 through 16 - and the meter must be manually set to match
the code in use. Probably the biggest disadvantage is that the power supply
comes from a size J battery - not always readily available late at night,
when meters invariably die! (There is a "low battery" warning message prior
to absolute shutdown, and no memory is lost during battery changes.)
The meter is available for around $70 or less and strips run about
$32 per 50 or $54 per 100, comparable to most other brands. The strips are
widely available since they are also used by Lifescan's Profile and One
Touch Basic meters.
In summary, I would highly recommend the One Touch II as a nearly
ideal meter for the newly diagnosed child of age three or older, as well as
for adults.
Have any of you purchased your meters? I have heard others talk of never paying for a meter since they spend so much $ for strips. We paid for both of ours! But also got 2 free Accuchecks from d camp.
TJ--just call the 800 number on the back of your son's meter and ask for the new model. If you have trouble getting that, contact your son's physician. They should be able to arrange that for you.
In Minnesota, insurance companies are required by law to provide supplies for individuals with diabetes. However, the insurance can play a part in the decision. Any other states have similar laws?
We have never had a problem getting blood from Kristina's fingers! When she was a baby, they would bleed forever and keeping a cotton ball on it till it stopped was always a challenge! She didn't like us holding onto her fingers so one of the first things she learned to hold on her own was a cotton ball! LOL
TJ--I have some good news for you re: the Elite. I'm not sure which model of the Elite you have, but there is one that is only 30 seconds (vs. 60) and it does have a memory (but without date and time). There is a new meter coming out by the same company hopefully by the end of the year with date and time; unsure about downloading capabilities on that one.
We started with the One touch with the little door you had to close and have worked our way up to the profile. It is one of the easiest to use. we use it at the hospital where I work. I don't like it for tiny kids because it takes a pretty big drop to be accurate.
