Camp and Sleepovers Diabetes Connection Summer Adventure Camp Melissa (POM) : Goodnight Ellen!! ***poof*** Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:46:21 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Melissa (POM) : Wow!! 3 nurses!!! that must be a big school!!!! But that is wonderful!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:44:32 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Ellen from WA State: Good night to you, Melissa! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:42:45 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Melissa (POM) : Well, you take care!! I'll see you again soon!! Goodnight Ellen!! ((((HUGS))))) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:42:05 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Ellen from WA State: I definitely want to evaluate other schools. We've checked a few private ones, but weren't impressed. I did apply to work for the district and it might be an easy solution. I can be on hand for emergencies, but of course the district still needs a nurse!!!! I would love to live in Texas! I also heard from a fellow who has 3 full-time nurses in his son's school. That sounds good to me, too. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:40:49 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Melissa (POM) : OH MY GOSH!!!!!!! that is just too much!!!!! I think I should just fly to WA with a few strong willed, stubborn Texans and start a rally or something!!! GEEEZ!!! And they still won't get a nurse??? What is the matter with these people??? Maybe changing schools is a real good idea!! HEY!!! Texas is always a nice place to live!! hehehehe Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:38:37 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Ellen from WA State: It would be a real education to operate a home page! I check out your web page as often as I can, but in March I had my mother-in-law staying with us and I had NO free time at all. I need to recheck it again. Thanks for your good wishes. All the best to you, too! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:37:14 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Melissa (POM) : Thanks Ellen!! The sponsor is still in the works but I'm hoping!! I was really lucky to find them!! I surf all the time looking for things that I think might be of use to someone!! I'm amazed at how much I've learned over the last year, and especially since I became the monitor here!! Did you see my webpage too??? It's got some of my best bookmarks in it!! I need to add more to it too!!! Well, goodnight! I'm glad you could come tonight!! I sure hope things work out with the suit and the nurse problems!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:35:25 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Ellen from WA State: Agreed. I think it's going to take a serious problem to open up the eyes of the parents and the district. Last week a 12 year old was run over by the school bus near our house. Guess who gave aid? The school bus driver, since there wasn't a nurse (the accident was right in the school parking lot and of course there was no nurse). Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:34:34 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Melissa (POM) : OH NO!!! I was discussing the lack of nurses in all the schools with a few moms at church one day! None of them have diabetic children or children with serious medical needs but they were just as outraged as me!! I wish there was something I could do about it!! It's just not right and it makes me so mad!! In my opinion, diabetes isn't nearly as serious as some diseases and handicaps!!! The schools NEED a nurse to be sure those kids get the care they need!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:32:16 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Ellen from WA State: Your home page is fantastic...it isn't easy to do and you did it WELL. You even got a sponsor, which is tremendous! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:30:49 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Ellen from WA State: Well, I know it's early on the west coast, but I need to go to bed! Thanks for a fabulous forum, Melissa. Give those kids of yours a hug from me! :o) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:28:59 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Melissa (POM) : LOL Ellen!! THIS is my support group!! I used to get so many letters from parents and we'd trade advice and ideas all the time!! You and I did ALOT when we first met!! Then the oportunity to monitor this room came up and I jumped at the chance!! It has just grown in leaps and bounds since then!! And now there is a real, honest to goodness support group here and it's not just through the email anymore!! The sponsor is Home Medical Supply Ellen!! If you click on their banner it'll take you to their home page! They can supply you with everything you could possible ever want as far as diabetic supplies!! I ran across them one day when I was looking for information on a meter!! They have a wonderful site that is beneficial to all of us here!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:28:37 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Ellen from WA State: "Healthy" families just taken their good health for granted and the neighbors I've talked to about the lack of nursing care seem sympathetic, but feel it's my problem. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:25:17 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Melissa (POM) : Hi Nightingale!! Thanks but it turns out, it's still in the works!! But they have a beautiful banner, don't you think?? :-) Ellen, that is so outrageous!!! the rest of the parents must be just as upset about it all as you are!! Have you spoken to any of them??? Their child will need medical attention just as much as anyone else's at some point or another!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:23:07 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Ellen from WA State: Maybe we can start our own local support groups! Just what you need though...another activity to do, right? What's this about a sponsor, Melissa? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:21:44 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Melissa (POM) : Ooops!! Sorry about that! It stalled!! I used to go to their support group when Kristina was first diagnosed!! It was wonderful to see other diabetic kids and they were running around just the same as the non diabetic kids!! I think that's what impressed us the most... that they were completely normal kids!!! We eventually stopped going when I felt like the subjects they were discussing just didn't have anything to do with us cause our child was so much younger!! now though, I have PLENTY to say when I go to one!! They're just so far away!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:20:08 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 NIGHTINGALE: room looks great..heard the news about your sponser so happy for you! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:20:00 (EST) - max09-039.qni.com Ellen from WA State: It's just incredible to me that our school secretary is responsible for the responsibilities your school nurse manages. This week our superindentant quit. I had the chance to talk to him a few weeks ago and he was frustrated with several issues. Our schools are overflowing, but the staff support is lacking. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:18:46 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net NIGHTINGALE: congratulations Melissa!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:18:33 (EST) - max09-039.qni.com Melissa (POM) : Yes, Ellen!! They really need to hire a nurse!! I see our school nurse sooooo busy everyday at lunch time, handing out meds to the kids!! Then there are the few handicapped kids to take care of, the sick ones who need to go home and the odd cut and scrape!!! Our nurse is kept running constantly!! I'm so amazed that not all schools have nurses for these kind of things!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:16:32 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Ellen from WA State: The support from here is tremendous! It's a one of a kind support system really. I have only been to one support group meeting and I sat and cried during the entire meeting. I have never been back, but I feel guilty every month! I need to try it again. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:13:47 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Melissa (POM) : Ellen, we meet other families when we go to the support group meetings!! The only problem for us is that they are an hour's drive away! They start at 7pm, usually end between 8:30 and 9pm and we don't get home till 10pm!!! And it's a school night!! the girls are dead the next day!! That's why I really love coming here so much more!! Less hassle and LOTS of support!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:11:49 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Ellen from WA State: To SFN: I agree with your point and it's well taken. I do wish the district would hire our school a nurse though. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:10:59 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Ellen from WA State: To SFN: It really is a challenge to find a qualified doctor! We live in a rural community and the doctors here are limited. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:09:35 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Melissa (POM) : Were they here Mark?? They never said hello!! I was beginning to wonder! goodnight and thank you so much!! I'll send this to Ron tomorrow and he'll have yet ANOTHER forum to get up for me!! LOL Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:08:55 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 SFN: I do have to leave.. but let me put this thought to ya Ellen.... if teachers started giving injections to kids in the schools like happens in home care iwth caregivers and the like.. it might get to be quite a slippery slope with regards to licenses and things.. well.. got to go.... Melissa..... it was a great forum.... as usual..... Mark Email me with some information about sponsors for the rooms. I have someone in San Jose... a Travel Nurse agency that may be interested in sponsoring a Chat room..... Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:08:44 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net Ellen from WA State: Good night Mark and thanks for the ideas! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:06:34 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Mark: Well ladies... I'm gonna head on off!! If our friends at Home medical are still lurking... how you enjoyed the forum... hope to talk with you soon! Nite all! ***poof*** Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:05:44 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Ellen from WA State: The doctor Melissa has been seeing is a Ped Endo, but his care is still substandard. I guess I've gotten increasingly unhappy with him since he thinks our expectations from the school district are unreasonable. I'm going to take Melissa to Children's Hospital in Seattle and see if they will support us. Sounds like your Ped Endo does a good job! One thing I would like from a class is the opportunity to meet other families. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:05:12 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net SFN: Qualified vs Unqulaified... boy don't get us nurses started on that topic or we will rock the house down... it is not an easy task to find a qulaified person ..... Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:03:25 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net Mark: They should at least be able to refer you to someone who specialises in Discriminatory law!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:02:48 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Melissa (POM) : Wow Ellen!! What about a Ped Endo??? I know several people who are being treated by their family doctor!! Margaret in Australia is happy with hers but there was a man on here not too long ago when his nephew was in the hospital and still hadn't seen a ped endo in 10 days!!!! It was rediculous and I hit the roof that that poor baby should be in the hospital so long and still have unstable blood sugars!!! And we have never taken a "class" either!! Instead, we had (and always have had) private, individual training from our ped endo and our nurse educator and the dietician!! We see all 3 on every visit and a social worker on occassion! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:02:20 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Ellen from WA State: Thanks ever so much for the phone number! I'll call them tomorrow. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:01:43 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Mark: Ellen ... here's the JDF phone # 1-800-JDF-CURE Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 23:00:59 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Ellen from WA State: Indeed there are handicapped teachers in our district. What I find discouraging is that there are several staff members begging to learn how to give injections and the district refuses to let them learn. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:59:38 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Ellen from WA State: Thanks for the information on the JDF. I don't know why I never thought to call them. I bet they have had troubles with injections in particular. Our school just says they will keep Melissa perfectly healthy. I really could sue them if they fall short of this unreasonable statement! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:58:01 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Mark: especially if they provide special ed teachers for handicapped children... then they are being dicriminatory!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:57:05 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Melissa (POM) : OOOOHHHHHHHHHH Lynn!!! That' right!!!! See?? I am tired!! How could I forget that you met Mark here??? hehehehehe Wow Ellen!! I just can't get over that they won't hire a nurse!! I've talked to sooo many parents about nurses in the schools ~~ Even parents of non-diabetic kids!! It's an absolute outrage that not every school has their own nurse!!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:56:51 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 SFN: Sorry Mark.... somebody that I know jsut got back from a vacation in Barbados... for some reason I thought it was YOU...... OPS..... now leave it to me to get things mixed up......hehehehehehe..... Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:56:39 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net Ellen from WA State: It's sad to think we have unqualified doctors giving care. I happened to take my son to another doctor in the facility my daughter sees the diabetologist. This other doctor recommended switching doctors and said we needed better care. I am still in schock! I thought this was a qualified doctor, but she says he doesn't offer all the necessary education we need. Our daughter was diagnosed 2 years ago and we've never had a single class. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:56:27 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Mark: Ellen.. the ymay be able to help... they may know simular situations in the same school or geo. area... and may be able to initiate a class action because of this... sounds to me like a great Civil Liberties Union case as well!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:55:34 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Mark: By the way Ellen... great idea for a forum!!! :-) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:53:32 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Ellen from WA State: Mark, I have not yet contacted the JDF. The attorney had been doing all the leg work, but I know he hasn't called them either. Would they be able to help? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:53:22 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Debbie: Thanks SFN. Sweet Dreams to you all! I have to get up early tomorrow!:) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:53:00 (EST) - ppp-25.ts-3.nyc.idt.net Melissa (POM) : SFN, me too!!! hehehehe Isn't that funny?? Nite Debbie!! I'm so glad you could come to this!! Good night Lynn!! Keep smiling!! You always make me laugh!! come by for a chat sometime when you have time!!! Ellen, was that doctor a pediatric endocronologist?????? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:52:45 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Mark: Ellen... did you contact the JDF??? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:52:36 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net SFN: Debbi.... My hat goes off to ya... You really do have your hands full. .. and TJ as well..... Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:51:46 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net Mark: SFN: did ya get a tan in Barbados???????? me... Barbados????? don't I wish!!!! :-) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:51:43 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Ellen from WA State: The school battle has been put on hold. The district still won't allow anyone but a nurse to give injections and they won't hire a nurse. The next step is the civil rights office and my attorney says we have 6 months to file. Our chances aren't great, since there are legal cases supportive of the district's position. At this point I'm considering switching schools. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:51:06 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Mark: Nite Lynn.. thanks for coming! :-) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:49:54 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Ellen from WA State: Melissa can I make a suggestion for a future forum? I would like to discuss qualified vs. unqualifed diabetic doctors. I have been e-mailing a mom with a little girl just diagnosed in February. The care the doctor gave was deplorable. The doctor finally admitted he had never had a diabetic child in his care before and he almost killed her with insulin. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:49:19 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Debbie: THanks Lynn! It's almost midnight here so I need to say goodnight also. Great forum Melissa! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:49:00 (EST) - ppp-25.ts-3.nyc.idt.net Melissa (POM) : LOL Ellen!! Don't feel bad! I'm tired too and I had a 3 hour nap!!! hehehe How's the problems with school going?? Any better?? Lynn, I don't think I realized you knew Mark!!??? Did I?? I don't remember now!! NEAT!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:48:24 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 SFN: Hey POM... I even had a hard time callin' ya Melissa when wees was fact to face.....hehehehehe.... Hey Markie my man... Yous is still here.....did ya get a tan in Barbados.... geesh....that sounded so GREAT!!!!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:48:08 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net Lynn from NJ: Point well-taken, Deb. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:47:53 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Debbie: I don't deserve an award! TJ does!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:47:27 (EST) - ppp-25.ts-3.nyc.idt.net Lynn from NJ: {{{Mark}}} nice to "see" you again. And Debbie, best of luck. I bet you're right, that they've probably handled it before, and everything would be just fine. I can't STAND that side of me that doubts everything. Thank goodness the other side wins most of the time :) Night, all. Thanks again, Melissa. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:47:07 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Mark: OK Melissa... send it to Ron so he can get it up on the chat!! :-) Great Forum!! as usual!! :-) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:46:49 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Ellen from WA State: Hi Melissa! Your POM handle is well earned with all you do. I feel guilty for feeling tired tonight and I haven't done much of anything! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:45:35 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Lynn from NJ: Debbie, I am also lucky with my asthmatic. Not really terrible attacks like I hear about from other parents. I can't imagine both things hitting one kid. And having to be that parent. You ought to be nominated for some award having to control all that at once! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:45:16 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Mark: Awwww Lynn.. you know me!! walk softly and carry a BIG keyboard!! hehehe Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:45:15 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Melissa (POM) : Bye Lynn!! Great to see you!! Hope I answered you question for you!!! :-) Ellen, it's so nice to see you!! Yes Mark, I've been saving about every 20 minutes!! That's about how long it took for another 100 messages to post!!! this was so FANTASTIC!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:44:49 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Mark: Hi SFN! yep still here!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:44:04 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Lynn from NJ: Mark old buddy old pal... how's it hittin, pal? Nice to see you. And here you thought you could lurk and I wouldn't notice :) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:43:51 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Debbie: Lynn, this is a very difficult decision for us, believe me. It hasn't been easy with both asthma and diabetes, but TJ is doing well and wants to go. I'd hate to hold him back. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:43:30 (EST) - ppp-25.ts-3.nyc.idt.net Mark: :-) Hi Lynn!! How are you?? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:42:58 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net SFN: Donald..... are you having difficulty with the room and each time you re-enter that statement comes back... or are you trying to tell us something else about your wife having diabetes.... ????? If you want to get rid of the statement.....just bookmark the room after you have posted "nothing" in the chat box.. youu will know that it is empty when you look up to the location box below the toolbar (if you are using Netxcape)... and there is nothing after the address of the room.... Mark... would you still be lurking around here????? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:42:36 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net Lynn from NJ: Wait... is that Mark? Like, ***the*** Mark? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:41:52 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Melissa (POM) : Ok, if anyone is wondering what the POM is for....... It's cause it's my handle!!! When I first joined a chat, I met Grey Ghost and Jet! I thought I was SUPPOSED to have a handle!! I chose Pooped Out Mom since I was espcially tired that night!!! It created a certain picture of me in people's minds and people remembered me for it so I always kept it! It didn't take long for it to be shortened to POM!! so you will sometimes see old friends, like SFN, still calling me POM!! When I became the moderator of this room, I wanted to present a more professional appearance and started using my own name!! But some of my old friends didn't know me by my name! So now I just use both to simplify things!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:40:51 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Mark: Melissa... did you archive?? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:40:41 (EST) - 047.msy4.communique.net Lynn from NJ: Last parting thought... Debbie, give me an insulin reaction ANY DAY over a child who cannot breathe. Although the chances are modest that an asthmatic child will "outgrow" the affliction and diabetics are (for the moment) stuck with theirs, the immediate needs of a child in an asthma attack, as you know are just that: immediate. I'm not sure I would send my asthmatic child (just me being overprotective, I'm sure) away to camp. Good luck! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:40:36 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Ellen from WA State: I didn't know aid or insurance might help! That's good to know. There's a camp for 5-13 year olds. How does an age spread like that work? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:40:02 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Debbie: Ellen, most of the camps offer financial aid. Also you may be able to get your medical insurance to pay for some or all of the fees. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:38:52 (EST) - ppp-25.ts-3.nyc.idt.net Debbie: The diabetes usually is our main concern but the asthma regimen is just as important. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:37:26 (EST) - ppp-25.ts-3.nyc.idt.net Ellen from WA State: We are sending our 6 year old to a camp for 6-8 year olds that lasts one weekend in June. The cost is reasonable, unlike the many other camps I researched. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:37:03 (EST) - cust47.max40.seattle.wa.ms.uu.net Donald: LYN... My wife is a diabetic... she has had severe reactions in the evenings in the past so much so..had to call the ambulance. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:36:47 (EST) - valleyonline.com SFN: POM there were only TWO camps in all of the state of California...WOW. that is not much... but one of them was right there in San Jose.... Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:36:16 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net Lynn from NJ: Hello Ellen, and goodbye everyone else :( It's getting late here in the east. Thanks for the Forum, Melissa. As always, a terrific experience. You guys are great! And Melissa, I like what you've done to the place. Pretty spiffy. Keep up the good work. :-) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:36:05 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Debbie: There were many parents who are thinking about it and many who have sent their kids for several summers. Mostly positive remarks. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:35:59 (EST) - ppp-25.ts-3.nyc.idt.net Melissa (POM) : Wow Debbie! I hadn't thought of that! I'm sure they would be keeping really close tabs on him!! They must get many children with asthma though!! That's pretty common I think!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:35:44 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Donald: LYN... My wife is a diabetic... she has had severe reactions in the evenings in the past so much so..had to call the ambulance. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:34:47 (EST) - valleyonline.com Debbie: TJ has three different asthma medications he gets along with the diabetes regimen! I would imagine they could handle it. Like I said before, someone is almost always here to chat with!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:24:58 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Lynn from NJ: Funny though... My other daughter has asthma. And whenever I get the "Why Me" whine from her, all I have to do is ask her if she'd rather give herself injections every day. Shuts her right up. Hey, you gotta use what you've got with these kids sometimes :) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:23:35 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com CAM: Goodnight everyone. Thank you for all of the good information. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:23:02 (EST) - mast6.ainop.com SFN: G'night Beth.... Donald....that can get pretty scarry.... I was enormously impresses when I met STAR a week or so ago and she talked about her little girl having a seizure due to being LOW... I was amazed at how much the parents of diabetic children are coping with in the home... it is just fantastic.... Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:22:42 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net Sue from Ma: Bye everyone, see you on this chat or parents chat. Ben on this for 1 1/2 hrs and sleep is next. Good luck to all. LOL Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:22:18 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Carla: Bye adam Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:22:17 (EST) - dialup4259.sisna.com Lynn from NJ: Night, Lyn and Adam. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:21:52 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Lynn from NJ: Sue and Beth, that's when you tell them that if you could take it all away and have it yourself, you would... And there are those times when Karisa (my daughter) whines the "Why Me" whine... That's difficult. Fortunately, I don't hear that too often. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:21:35 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Adam: Thanks for a great room. My first time here and I enjoyed it. Bye for now Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:21:12 (EST) - dal-tx15-12.ix.netcom.com Sue from Ma: Beth-you don't do nearly as much of it, maybe only once or twice. A little while ago, Lauren was doing a shot and she almost started crying it hurt so much and then there was a big lump and that's when I wanted to cry for her. Just make it go away. !! Bye Lyn Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:20:06 (EST) - ww-tc07.proxy.aol.com Lynn from NJ: Sue, agreed. I shall do that. My daughter really, really wants to go back. There are no children around here at all with diabetes. She is the token in the school system! So it's good for her to be around others who can reinforce. And that's just what happened. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:19:50 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Adam: 2 Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:19:22 (EST) - dal-tx15-12.ix.netcom.com Laurie: Nite Lyn Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:19:19 (EST) - mast6.ainop.com Debbie: Goodnight Lyn! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:18:38 (EST) - ppp-14.ts-5.nyc.idt.net Laurie: SFN At Camp CareFree in NH there were 14 kids to a cabin 2 counselors and one CIT per cabin. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:18:14 (EST) - mast6.ainop.com Lynn from NJ: Beth, how old is the child? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:18:00 (EST) - ppp-14.ts-5.nyc.idt.net Sue from Ma: Lynn-i remember that conversation too and I kept saying, she's not very active but I ended up being wrong, she did lots of running. If she goes to camp again, I would stress what happened the last time and that you appreciate lower readings. There is a happy medium between a low and 300's Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:17:53 (EST) - ww-tc07.proxy.aol.com Lyn: Thanks folks...got some really fantastic information here tonight. Goodnight :) Really appreciate your doing this Melissa!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:17:48 (EST) - 172-162-244.ipt.aol.com SFN: Sorry POM... guess when I put this room in a smaller window it excluded that part of the room... I certainly will check those links out.... Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:17:14 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net Melissa (POM) : Good night Beth!! I'm glad you were able to come!! LOL Lyn!! I remember the ONE orange I injected about BENT the needle!! hehehe It was easier to do Kristina!! But my hands were shaking like crazy!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:17:05 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Lynn from NJ: SFN... I can't remember the number of "cabins," but there were eight kids and two counselors in each cabin. Donald: I have been very lucky. So far, only two severe lows in over six years. And those were dreadful. I feel for you. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:16:52 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Beth: Oh yuck Sue - I saw that post. You mean I've got years of crying yet????? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:16:08 (EST) - tty107.pld.com Donald: Hello Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:15:48 (EST) - valleyonline.com Adam: Melissa, I can only tell you that Camp Sweeney keeps the kids going from morning to night. They have so many activities for the children to choose from along with classes for improving their knowledge that Kristina will forget about being away so long. It's really helpful that she will be around other children of her own age group along with the many staff members and counselors. Michelle's cabin usually has 20 girls with 4 counselors. We also told Michelle that if she really hated camp, she was to tell her counselor and have them call us and we would pick her up and still paid. And like I said earlier, she only could say I don't want to leave and how soon can I come back. Kristina will have a great time. If you do send her, I'd be curious to know which session she attend since Michelle will be going to the first session again. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:15:20 (EST) - dal-tx15-12.ix.netcom.com Laurie: Nite Beth and Melissa Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:14:57 (EST) - mast6.ainop.com Sue from Ma: Lynn-your right , the good with the bad. You didn't mention the crying in the hospital and again at home for weeks/months and yes years later sometimes. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:14:46 (EST) - ww-tc07.proxy.aol.com Lynn from NJ: When they take that comprehensive information we give them before the children enter camp, it seems to me they ought to pay more attention to which child is usually active and which one is not. My daughter is (unfortunately) not terribly active, and that continued throughout the camping week. When they see that, and it is reflected in the numbers... I don't know. I guess I wouldn't want the responsibility of a child with a dangerous low, either. Guess it's for the best. I didn't see it that way then, though. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:14:43 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Chris from NE: Time for me to sign off. Melissa, thank you for adding me to the list! Adam, thanks for the letter, I will pass it along. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:14:30 (EST) - 207.49.224.119 Donald: LYN... LOL I counted how many names I have in my address book today that I regularly email to about these forums!!! It came to 348!!!! I add new ones almost every day!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:14:12 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 SFN: Lynn I guess you are right about the good with the bad.... How many campers are there per session... and what is the camper to counselor ratio... again... just curious.... Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:12:58 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net Debbie: Goodnight Beth! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:12:44 (EST) - ppp-14.ts-5.nyc.idt.net Sue from Ma: Goodnight Melissa SFN-Clara is in Oxford Mass and joslin is right near it. Lynn-i rememer them doing that too, adjusting down for I don't remember it being a constant problem. Maybe it was but I was so glad to see her, she was happy, smiling and having fun that that was all I needed to see at that time. I know they were checked all the time. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:12:05 (EST) - ww-tc07.proxy.aol.com Lynn from NJ: Goodnight, Beth. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:12:04 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Beth: Think I'll head out. Thanks Melissa. Your room looks nice! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:11:32 (EST) - tty107.pld.com Lynn from NJ: Beth, you poor thing. I remember that awful hospital stay myself... 8 days of confusion, information, consoling, (sleeplessness), injecting oranges :) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:10:59 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Melissa (POM) : Wow Lynn!! That's pretty high!! SFN and everyone else.... Please be sure to click on the links I had put up next to the message box!! The first one is the one with the extensive listing of camps by state! Just click on your state and it'll list the camps for you!! Camp and Sleepovers was a really great article I found and Diabetes Connction Summer Adventure Camp sounds like alot of fun!! Someone asked about the midwest.... If I remember right, this one is a midwestern one!!! These were pretty much the only really good sites I could find!! There were lots of sites for SPECIFIC camps, but they are all listed in that first link!! Be sure to look at them when you have a moment!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:10:41 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Lori: Jarrod really wants to go. I don't think he will get homesick at all. I will be the one with the problem. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:10:04 (EST) - will_18s.citynet.net Carla: Thanks for the letter Adam Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:09:33 (EST) - dialup4259.sisna.com Beth: It wasn't easy Sue. I cried most of the way home. But at that point I figured they knew more than I did and after having her in the hospital for 8 days I was ready for a break! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:08:34 (EST) - tty107.pld.com Debbie: SFN, The Disney Institute in Orlando will be running diabetes education sessions for both adults and children. It sounds like a great place to go!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:07:33 (EST) - ppp-14.ts-5.nyc.idt.net Lynn from NJ: And two weeks after my daughter came back from camp, she dissuaded my dissillusions. She began injecting herself for the first time in four years with the disease. Guess you've gotta take the good with the bad ;) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:07:04 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Sue from Ma: Beth-I couldn't do that. I was still calling the doctor on a nightly basis i think !! Debbie- I would highly recommend doing a weekend this spring. They do small group based on the childrens ages and the whole family goes. I met people from NY here, some drove 5hrs. We went over to Joslin to look at it, walked around it etc. They were very helpful. Maybe you don't do camp this year until you do a weekend? Show your son what it's about! Lori-at our camp, the DR stays on the grounds plus there was a nurse. It there is a real problem, they would call you Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:07:03 (EST) - ww-tc07.proxy.aol.com Lori: Lynn- We had the same problem when Jarrod went on an overnight with the diabetes youth group. They let them eat all kinds of stuff. He was 300 all weekend. It took awhile to get him back to normal. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:06:44 (EST) - will_18s.citynet.net Adam: Laurie and Melissa, I've sent a copy out to you. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:06:22 (EST) - dal-tx15-12.ix.netcom.com Melissa (POM) : Lynn, I've heard nothing but good things all night!! Lori, I'm sure that if there was an emergency, camp would be about the best place to be!!! They probably catch it sooner than you would at home or at school!! I think I worry about the homesickness more!! Someone said it took about 10 days for the homesickness to pass! So how well do the kids do at a one week camp??? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:05:54 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Lynn from NJ: When I asked the endo on staff about it, she told me that they liked to adjust the insulin down at camp, for fear of lows. I can understand that, but there was not a single reading under 250 the whole entire week. Don't you think they could re-adjust according to each individual? Sheesh. I was very unhappy. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:05:51 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Debbie: CAM you should look at the listing in Castleweb(Children with Diabetes) Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:05:20 (EST) - ppp-14.ts-5.nyc.idt.net Lynn from NJ: Sue, the problem I had was that I thought everything would be just wonderful. A whole camp full of diabetes professionals... the counselors all Type 1's... but when I got there at the end of that long week I found that they changed al of her dosages... right from the first day! She was in the high 300's the WHOLE time. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:04:19 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com SFN: Just curious... where are the Clara Barton and Joselyn Camps... what state...???? and is there a list of camps somewhere that tells which are diabetic camps.... and has anyone heard of doing this type of thing for adults that have Type II.... sometimes think that my Adult patients could benifit from the interaction and the education..... Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:04:04 (EST) - filter-vol.nortel.net CAM: We live in NEPa. Does anyone know if there is a family camp within driving distance? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:02:32 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Sue from Ma: Bye Sue Lynn-I thought at CBC, they were very conscientious about care and documented everything. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:01:58 (EST) - ww-tc07.proxy.aol.com Lori: It seems that alot of you are far away. Most of the kids from near here go to WV camp which is over 4 hrs. I guess I just worry about emergencies. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:01:39 (EST) - will_18s.citynet.net Debbie: Not that I'm aware of Sue from MA. The only one I've seen in NY is in Rochester and that's about an 8 hour drive! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:00:43 (EST) - ww-tc07.proxy.aol.com Beth: We're 5 hours away from Sara's and I sent her two weeks after she was diagnosed last year! Talk about nervous!!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 22:00:35 (EST) - tty107.pld.com Melissa (POM) : I think we're 2 to 2 1/2 hours away from Camp Sweeney!! We've sent Kristina on many sleep overs with her grandparents but I wonder how she'd do in a strange place, for so long!! Lori-camp for us is 1 and 1/2 hrs away. Have you visited the camp? Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:58:04 (EST) - ww-tc07.proxy.aol.com Sue: Sending our daughter to camp was the best thing we did for her ( and for us)..a break is what we all need from the day to day, and we are very comfortable with her at camp. I would not feel that way unless it was a camp for diabetics though Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:58:00 (EST) - ip-ts2-154.neca.com Robynn & David: Sorry we can't stay - perhaps we will catch up again soon BYE Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:57:46 (EST) - cephalod.senet.com.au Melissa (POM) : Hi Lynn!! I had always planned on waiting till Kristina was 8 but she'll be 7 in May, so I'm seriously considering sending her for the week! She is sooo excited about going to camp!! But neither of us know what to expect!! So I hesitate........ Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:56:57 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Laurie: Lori the one Ryan went to was about 8 hours away Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:56:52 (EST) - mast2.ainop.com Debbie: It's hard too because we are in NYC and Joslin is pretty far away I think. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:56:08 (EST) - ww-tc07.proxy.aol.com Sue: Clara Barton has been bulding new sits, and fixing the older ones. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:53:31 (EST) - mtrs-244ppp55.epix.net Sue from Ma: Debbie- I haven't been back there for a couple of years but it was nice, small and neat. They were building some new big cabins for the big girls a few years ago and the camp sits around a pond. They run different types of weekends there all fall, spring and I think winter. We had been to several which I'm sure helped Lauren feel comfortable. Try to go to clean up day May31st. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:53:29 (EST) - ww-tc07.proxy.aol.com Melissa (POM) : Wow Adam!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:52:31 (EST) - ppp-14.ts-5.nyc.idt.net Lynn from NJ: Hello, Melissa... sorry I'm late :) Hi, all. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:52:27 (EST) - sl-ppp154.monmouth.com Robynn & David: Megan attended her first camp at age 5, and we were a little concerned that she would not like being with so many strangers, so we arranged for her sister to attend also. Because of the age gap between then, the girls were split up for all activities - boy did that backfire. But Megan's response was that she didn't miss us, she had too much fun and no Leona didn't need to go with her again. I'm sure it would be easy to get the doc to write it!! We're so close to Camp Sweeney here in TX, plus several others, that most people in the doc's office plan to participate at some time or another this summer!! Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:50:12 (EST) - 207.22.198.58 Adam: CAM, some camps will let you visit but they are very concerned about causing homesickness. Camp Sweeney let us come up last year but they would like parents to wait until 10 days before coming up. They found that it takes about 10 days for the children to get over their homesickness and then they truly enjoy the camp. Each year we always hear "I don't want to leave camp" It's great to hear that after Michelle's been gone for the 3 weeks. Thursday, April 03, 1997 at 21:44:30 (EST) - 207.49.224.119 CAM: I wanted to say that you all seem so positive about camp. I guess it REALLY is a good idea. I will worry so much.
